If there’s one thing that your wardrobe needs, regardless of what you do for work and how old you are, is a wrap dress.
Wrap dresses are not just a trend – they are an essential wardrobe must-have.
This timeless piece of clothing provides comfort, function, and fashion in one because it’s universally flattering and it’s so easy to pull off.
So, here are a few reasons why a wrap dress is a must have in your capsule wardrobe.
What is a Wrap Dress?
The wrap dress was created in the early 1970s by fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg.
This dress is basically a single-piece dress with a three-panel design that includes the inner panel, outer panel, and a belt or a snap to fasten the two.
It follows your body, enhancing and concealing at the same time, that is the reason why it looks amazing on all body types.
Since Furstenberg introduced the work-to-play style, the effortless look has become a staple in women’s wardrobes.
Her wrap dress traditionally consists of long sleeves, a V neckline, and a knee-length skirt.
Over the years, the iconic wrap dress became a symbol of femininity, women’s empowerment and hence a wardrobe essential.
Even though it’s been more than 40 years since Diane Von Furstenberg unveiled her first wrap dress, it seems the high street still have such a big demand for them.
Today, however, cool textures, prints, and varied hemlines dominate this classic style.
What Is a Capsule Wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe should be at the very centre of your clothing collection season after season.
As the seasons go by and fashion trends come and go, your capsule wardrobe will remain in place, as stylish, versatile and wearable as ever.
The term capsule wardrobe was first coined by Susie Faux, the owner of a London-based fashion boutique in the 1970’s.
The phrase means a curation of essential pieces within your wardrobe that can be worn and styled with many other things to ensure you are never stuck for something to wear.
Deciding to invest in a capsule wardrobe is exciting, you know you’re going to treat yourself to some new pieces and, by the nature of the exercise, they’ll be beautiful, stylish pieces that you will love and wear for a long time.
However, this is not the only great thing that starting a capsule wardrobe will do for you.
Planning and arranging your own capsule wardrobe will also encourage you to cleanse your closet of unwanted, unworn and, let’s face it, uncool, items, that you’ve been stubbornly hanging on to.
Why Is the Wrap Dress the Perfect Piece for a Capsule Wardrobe?
A wrap dress is a wardrobe staple you must invest in when creating a capsule wardrobe.
So, if you don’t already have one, here are a few reasons why you need to get yourself a wrap dress now.
You Can Wear It Anywhere and Everywhere
Day to night, work to events– the wrap dress will carry you through every kind of occasion.
Depending on the accessories you add, a wrap dress can be dressed up or down.
In fact, there are not too many places where you can’t wear this classic piece.
Dress it down with a denim jacket and sneakers for a casual day out, or pair it with statement heels and a blazer for a night out.
But, fabrics like silk and cotton blends should be your go-to when dressing up.
Just a quick change of shoes and accessories and you’re good to go.
It’s always a safe, chic choice.
They Never Go Out of Style
It’s very rare that a style or certain piece stays in style more than one season.
But as a style that’s been around for over 40 years, the wrap dress is undoubtedly more than just a trend.
This piece of clothing has been around for so many years and has established itself as a classic is the wrap dress.
Even in today’s fashion industry where styles are ephemeral, the wrap dress design continues to stay relevant.
Timeless, effortlessly chic and totally on-trend.
It’s the Perfect Fit
The best thing about a wrap dress is that it will fit you from the moment you first purchase it to the many times your weight changes.
Most clothes don’t give you much wiggle room when you gain or lose weight.
But, with a wrap dress, it’s a perfect fit every time and can be customized to your figure.
Whether you’re petite, curvy, straight or tall, a wrap flatters almost every figure.
Unlike these dresses, a wrap dress grows with you.
Because they’re adjustable, you can tie them as loosely or tightly as you like.
The tie waist allows you to easily wrap it once or twice around and tie it to fit my figure.
Because the closure is often a side tie, it can accommodate a few couple inches added around your waist so you can continue wearing it while you’re trying to burn off extra weight.
You can even use it as a maternity dress, and it would still fit you after you’ve given birth.
No tailoring required.
It’s Easy to Style
The wrap dress goes with anything and everything you have in your closet and your accessory armoire.
You can wear it with any kind of footwear as well, from flip flops to flats to wedges and heels.
It’s Perfect for Any Age
The wrap dress knows no age.
The endless amount of options when choosing this dress makes the style timeless and appropriate for any age.
If you prefer a little more coverage, try one a longer sleeve length with a knee-length hemline.
It Can Be Worn All Year Round
A wrap dress isn’t just for the summer.
This versatile dress can be styled to be worn all year round as it can be easily transitioned from season to season.
If you are going to invest in a dress for a capsule wardrobe, a wrap dress is a great place to start as it won’t be restricted to only one season.
You can wear it in the summer for a breezy, relaxed style or layer it with tights, a cardigan, and even a trench coat in the winter.
You can even wear it as a beach cover-up by wearing your bikini or swimsuit underneath the wrap dress and easily taking it off when you are ready to take a dip in the water.
It’s Long Lasting
Wrap dresses typically come in low-maintenance fabrics like knit jersey.
They wash well, travel well, and stand up to frequent use, making it a durable piece.
Of course, the longevity of a wrap dress depends on the quality of the fabric used, so be mindful when shopping for one.
When it comes to choosing a wrap dress for your capsule wardrobe, choose quality.
This will ensure that your wrap dress lasts longer.
Other Reasons to Love The Wrap Dress
It Creates a Curvier Silhouette
What’s great about the wrap dresses is that they can disguise the areas that they want hidden, especially the midsection of the body.
Bulges can be concealed with a wrap-style frock, especially when you choose the right print or style.
This can provide the illusion of a more defined waistline for a curvier, sexier silhouette.
Wrap dresses are minimalist garments.
Because they don’t have any hardware, zippers, or buttons, they’re the epitome of comfort and minimalism.
So, simply slip it on to not only look chic but also feel incredibly comfortable.
If you’re looking for the one piece of clothing that can make you look feminine without exerting too much effort, a wrap dress is the one for you.
Wrap dresses are effortlessly chic and feminine.
And you can easily up the feminine factor with jewellery by wearing an armful of bangles, a statement necklace, or a pair of shoulder-grazing earrings.
Finish off the look with ankle boots in the winter, and metallic gladiator sandals in the summer.
It’s Easy to Wear
With a wrap dress, you can be fashionable without really trying.
One dress does the trick.
One long dress means not spending time coordinating your top and bottom and fussing over ensembles.
It’s easy to get in and out and it only takes one piece to be fully dressed.
Select it from your wardrobe, pair it with some shoes and some jewellery and you are out the door.
This cuts down on time and styling conundrums.
It’s Flattering for All Body Types
The beauty of a wrap dress is that it magically gives you that hourglass shape, no matter what your size.
The perfect wrap dress will follow your body and enhance it on just the right places, while also concealing all areas you’re not too fond of.
This dress style cinches your waist, lifts and highlights your bust to show off your curves in a classy and tasteful way.
Necklines can range from modest to plunging, depending on how you tie it.
There Are So Many Styles to Choose From
Because it’s been around for so long, designers constantly reinvent the wrap dress season after season.
With so many styles and colours out there so be sure to pick a shade that suits your colouring.
You will find everything from true wrap dresses to faux wrap dresses; with and without embellishments; and fabrics in every colour, pattern, and print that you can imagine.
There are also many lengths of wrap dresses out there – midi length, maxi lengths, made of silk or satin, with long sleeves or strapless.
So, if you are looking for a modest option, you can choose one with a longer hem and long sleeves.
You can always opt for wild patterns and bold colours to suit your personality.
Depending on how much skin you like to show, there’s a wrap dress for you.
Necklines range from modest to plunging V-necks.
Sleeves can end at the shoulders or all the way down to the wrists.
And lengths can dip from above the knee to the floor.
How to Tie a Wrap Dress
There are many different styles of wrap dresses, which have different ways of tying them.
However, the most common type of wrap dress comes with two attached strings and slits.
Wearing it appropriately is important to get the right look and feel comfortable in it.
Put the dress on one sleeve at a time, as you would a coat and allow the dress to hang naturally.
Then, make sure the back panel is placed well and check if the side seams are positioned rightly across or along both sides of the body.
Wrap the left side of the dress across your body by pulling it against your body so it covers most of your chest.
Then, adjust it until you are happy with the way it sits on you.
Next, open the dress and locate the hole in the seam.
It can be on the right or the left side depending on the type of dress you have.
Your dress should also have one long string and one shorter string.
Take feed long string through the slit by inserting the tip of the longer string in the hole and pull it through with your other hand.
Before tying the dress, pull the left side of the dress over the right side of your body to adjust it properly.
Pull up the neckline until you are comfortable with how the dress is sitting on your body.
Then, bring the string you pulled through the hole all the way around your back until it meets the other string.
Tie the longer string with the shorter string attached to the right half of the dress to secure it.
Tie the knot securely in a double knot to ensure that it doesn’t come undone.
With its versatility, comfort and number of different styles, it’s easy to see why the wrap dress has been an essential wardrobe staple and classic since the 70s.
So, find a design and style that suits you to add to your capsule wardrobe.
